I have taken occasion to bring under the notice of the Portuguese Mind, for the subject of the Macao Coolie Traffic, more specially that under the denomination of free emigration, did not fail to point out to H.C. the deep interest felt by this country in the total suppression of this traffic, not only on the grounds of humanity, but in the interests of civilisation. And I clearly stated it as the conviction of my Government that the traffic in question, under whatever head, would never be entirely done away with surely.
